Many of the old timers tell us that Northwest winds bring in the fish. Cookie and I have pondered this and figure that salmon probably raise sails when no one is looking. Whatever the reason, the salmon fishing has picked up this week with Cohoe and Andrews Points being the most consistent producers. The depth range is widely varied right now, with Chinooks being taken anywhere from 5 to 90 pulls. The cold water this year is definitely bringing the fish in closer and shallower, but we are still advising anglers to keep their lines spread out.
The lower temperature also seems to be making the fish very energetic, with some people reporting up to 45 minute battles to boat a 20 lb. Chinook. The boated fish are exceptionally crisp and clean, yielding beautiful, deep red meat when filleted. I am very proud of my new dock team, in that they have taken ownership of the fish cutting and are already challenging my own skills in this fine art. This is great since we are entering prime time for June, the tides become less steep and the salmon school up in the back eddies for extended feeding sessions.
Katherine Harris caught a 24 pound Chinook at Andrews today, after winning a debate with her husband, Thom, that they should move to Pillar Bay and fish for hali. He's been obsessed with catching one since his day 1 decision to release a 30 punder “because he was sure they could do better.”
The halibut fishing is truly awesome at Langara this year. Cookie and I have had good success with our guided convoy trips. But many anglers are finding spots on their own and are consistently boating fish in the 20 to 70 pound range. Incidental hookups on salmon gear are surprising many people with lengthy and challenging battles after that unmistakable halibut hit.
As always, in between fighting fish, eagles, sea-birds, whales and sea lions provide plenty of diversion. Yesterday I came across our old friend Mike Sokolski, sitting quietly in his boat, a 32 pound Chinook at his feet, watching the waves break on Andrews Point.
