July 2 was a truly epic day at Langara. Glen Indra and Frank Hero both bagged 15 pound Coho. Don Freus and Matt Hala entered the Captain’s Chinook club with 32 and 41 pound Chinnoks respectively.
But, in a week marked by big fish on both ships, the standout has to be Eric Bruener 65 pound Chinook caught at Cohoe Point last night. When the fish hit it jumped clear over the stern of his boat, almost taking Eric back into the water with it. The ensuing battle lasted two hours, with boat-handler/net-man Andy Billings expertly managing his job. The fish was caught on an OBMG Kufa with a brand new Islander Reel on 25 lb test Triple Fish at 33 pulls, 8 ounces. Eric has decided to retire this package and hang it on the wall next to the fish he will have mounted.
Obviously things are picking up at Langara, with Coho and Chinooks increasing in number every day. We’re hoping they crowd the Pinks out and send them south. Halibut fishing continues to be strong in all the usual spots with No Name Point also coming on strong. We have been having beautiful summer weather and a few guests were shocked to realize they should have brought sunscreen. Three days ago a massive pod of at least 50 Orcas transited the Island from Gunia Point all the way around to Lacy Island exciting everyone with their acrobatics and natural charm.
