Fishing in Hakai Pass

Hakai Pass is home to some of the best fishing anywhere in the world.

Each year, millions of salmon, halibut, Ling cod and rockfish fill its waters, making it an angler’s paradise. Fishing hotspots are just minutes from the resort.

All fishing gear is provided at the MV Marabell, including fully-equipped 17’ Boston Whaler Montauks. Be sure to read about our Reel Coaching program, where you can get on-the-water instruction from our crew.

Chinook salmon

The Hakai salmon fishing season starts off in early July with the Chinook, or King salmon, fishery. Countless Chinook make their way through Hakai Pass each year on their way to Rivers Inlet, Smith Inlet and spawning rivers on Vancouver Island and the lower mainland. These aggressive fish weigh in anywhere from 10 to 60 lbs., and after 45 minutes with a fish on the line you’ll understand why they’re called ‘Kings.’

The world-record salmon, an incredible 85 lb. Chinook, was caught at Odlum Point, about two minutes from the MV Marabell.

Coho salmon

In late July and early August the next big wave of Hakai salmon arrives: the Coho. Coho (also known as Silvers) are legendary for their aerial acrobatics and high-energy fight, and will have your adrenaline pumping from the moment they strike.

Coho in Hakai Pass can get up to 24 lbs., so don’t forget the stretch before you hit the water!

Halibut, Ling cod and rockfish

All season long, MV Marabell guests are treated to fantastic halibut, Ling cod and rock fishing in Hakai Pass. Halibut averageabout 20 to 50 lbs. (thought some get past 200 lbs.), making them ideal for the barbeque, and a wide variety of rock fish make for exciting fishing.
